International Photobook Dummy Award 2014

Open calls | 15 May 2014

Photographers worldwide are invited to present their so far unpublished photobooks to an international public and to eminent experts. The best 50 books will be exhibited at international photo events in, among others, Athens, Cologne, Dublin, Madrid, Oslo, Paris, Rome and Sao Paulo. From these 50 titles, the winners will be chosen by an international jury of experts at The PhotoBookMuseum Cologne in September. The winner of the First Prize will be given the opportunity to realize their dummy as a “real” book and will be reported on in the magazine European Photography.

The International Photobook Dummy Award of the Fotobookfestival Kassel* was launched in 2009; it aims to focus the attention of photographers — including those who have yet to publish their work — on the unique qualities of the photobook, and on what happens once a photographer starts to take work off the walls and onto the printed page. The book dummy is frequently the first opportunity for a photographer to wrestle with the problems of what hap- pens once a sequence of images is committed to paper: what about the fundamental decisions on image size, pairing images together, deciding what type of paper to print on or which pho- tograph to put on the cover, how and where type appears on the page, on binding and number of copies.

Registration for the Award costs 32 Euros (plus return postage charges, if necessary).

Entries close on 15 May 2014.
