Course: Genres of Photography with David Bate

Events | 10 April 2018 - 29 May 2018

Genres of Photography considers the photographic image as a set of distinct practices, which can nevertheless be mutated through the blurring of their boundaries. The course looks at the way different photographic genres establish and enable the distribution of certain types of effect and meaning. The resilience of photographic images show a fundamental relation to what we might call ‘reality’ and an enduring relevance for all human culture.

Each week will look at a range of visual examples and issues raised by the genre and followed by discussion, where participants can bring photographs in to talk about in the session. The course will draw on a range of literature and references relevant to the topics and session themes, which will enable the participant to develop their own further independent work on these topics
